Wi-fi at the Garden

I’m posting from a garden! Very nice. Maybe we should be thinking of new types of notebook screens. The ones that exist are not suitable to use outside. Maybe some sort of outside-oriented techonology like TOUGHBOOK SERIES should be used. Anyway, the connection has a very impressive speed. I would like to try one these cantenna or a more cheap Pringles Antennas for Wi-fi! The question is: How long before we can use it anywhere?

A new browser: Firebird

I’ve just installed and started do use Mozilla’s Firebird browser. First opinion is very positive. It’s a browser with a very good speed on loading pages. Very quick indeed! But the detail I like the most is Tab Browsing. This feature allows you to open links on a page in background Tabs and then read them when you’re ready. You can even open an entire folder of bookmarks in Tabs. Tabs makes browsing faster and more efficient. By looking at a small icon on top of wach Tab you can check if the page has already downloaded. No need to check a new window to do that. tab done icon

Color and E-Commerce

Color matters everywhere we go. Trust is built by good design & color. Website should be no different. This text excerpted from the book Color Voodoo for E-Commerce is a good introduction to the color subject.

The Business Benefits of Web Standards

I’ve been reading a lot on the Web Standards Project. As you can read on this article web standards let you deal with some commom problems for web developers: diversity of browsers, accessibility and maintenance. The article also discusses how web standards can contribute to a company’s business goals. A book Designing With Web Standards has just been released by zeldman.

Japanese Culture vs European Culture

I always thought that the Japanese have a very closed social environment in which they comunicate primarily via web and mobile phone. Reading this interview I was able to consolidate my thoughts on this. Telecoms and ISPs are big businesses there because social conditions and culture enable them to prosper. For example, a school girl can change as much as 200 messages on a normal day! This kind of behavior is typical on Japan. I trully hope and belive that Europe will never be that technology-dependent because eventhough some predicted that the internet would kill social relations that has not been hapenning. Thankfully!

The Amazon Way

Again amazon is again delighting its customers. Offering release-date delivery of the new Harry Potter book amazon made another one of it’s great marketing moves! In order to meet impatient demand for the Harry Potter book online retailer Amazon.com is offering to speed-deliver the title to customers the minute it goes on sale July 8, at no extra cost.

Lyn Blake, the general manager of Amazon.com’s bookstore, says “We look at this as a marketing expense. We believe it is the right thing to do for our existing customers and new ones.” Amazon usually charges $10.99 for overnight shipping, plus a $2.99 handling fee per item. Advance-order Potter buyers will still pay the standard $3.30 delivery charge, plus a 99-cent handling fee.

Amazon teamed up with FedEx Corp. to offer free shipping. It’s “the largest distribution event to date of any single item in e-commerce.” More than 9,000 delivery people and vehicles from more than 700 stations covering the continental U.S. will be mobilized.

The Microbus

I thought I had to put this post on the general category but as I was making the choice I found that user experience would be more apropriate! Why? Because owning and driving a WV Bus is an experience in it self! And thankfully VW is making The Microbus coming back!
In 2005 and leaving from the Hannover facility a new Microbus will finally hit the roads. It is all about user experience. A great, long-running experience!

Drop-Shipping

Cut Start-Up Costs By Using a Drop-Shipper (What is drop shipping?) is a good guide to find out how you can outsource packaging and distribution of your products. I’m not a good suporter of drop-shipping because you loose a bit of control on the way things are sent to the customer.
