alkantara festival 2008

Disruption by Microsoft
Google, of course, is the company he most wants to disrupt, and in late May, Microsoft announced a bald attempt to do so - a “cash back” program that will pay customers to use its search engine (rather than Google’s) by sending them a rebate check whenever they find a product and make a purchase through Windows Live Search. (seen here)
If you can’t make a better product , buy users. That’s Microsoft view of the online world.
reboot10
The unmissable conference will be happening again on the 26 and 27 of June in Copenhagen, Denmark.

It’s the 4th time I’m going to reboot (reboot7, reboot8 and reboot9) but I couldn’t miss it. Every year I return full of ideas and good mood for all the projects I’m doing.
Reboot is a free place to wonder around, meet people, discover new stuff, hear crazy ideas, discuss any topic and just communicate with other open minded people.
It seems that this year we will have the biggest Portuguese presence ever.
Going Solo Interview
A video of me and my good friend Moses (from ChamaInc) at Going-Solo.
Nuno and Eddie who were also at the conference also have a video.
Hearing my own voice is really strange but I think the interview went really well and it explains some interesting stuff so I decided to share it. (Ok, my mum asked for it.)
Bring Your Own Laptop
There’s a small but growing trend in which companies* are choosing to give employees money toward their personal laptop. (Seen here)
All the places where I worked before starting adegga there was an issue with work vs personal laptops. On every case it was easier and more productive to just use my own Mac. Switching and synchronizing everyday from one computer to the other makes no sense.
I wish companies would be more creative in finding out ways to make their employees life easier not more difficult. This should be the default behavior not a trend.
* ok the whole article is about Microsoft’s desktop virtualization technology but that’s not the point.
Bad Indiana movie

When the first Indiana Jones came out I was certainly younger and didn’t notice some of the ridiculous action scenes. But there’s was more to the old Indiana Jones. More story. More things to make us think. The latest one is just bad.
The only thing was the return of the great Harrison Ford.
I wish this was finished so I could bash the movie.
SAPO Unplugged 08
É já amanhã em Aveiro que o SAPO vai realizar o primeiro de um conjunto de eventos abertos ao público. O tema do primeiro SAPO Unplugged é a Usabilidade.

Going Solo but not alone
Going Solo went really well. It was a small 70-people conference but talks were full of good tips and being this small networking was made easier.
Two of the most interesting time slots were used for a panel on Setting Rates and Negotiating with Clients and Martin Roell’s presentation on Self-Organisation for Effectiveness.
If you want to get a feeling of what the conference was all about take a look at these 2 videos:
Some people did live-blogging, others took photos and there’s are also a bunch of presentation videos available and some interviews. Stephanie has posted links to all of this.
My overall feeling about the conference is that I have been having some of the same challenges as most of the people who work for clients, from home or alone. This conference made me feel I’m not alone in some of these issues and that alone made it worth the trip.
On top of it was great to be back in Geneva (I like that tram even more now) and be with some friends.
Geneva / Lausanne for Going Solo
I’ll be in Geneva and Lausanne the next 4 days to attend Going Solo. I’ll be flying tomorrow with good friends and will be staying with oher good ones.
I think Going Solo is going to be a great opportunity to do some networking and meet with other people that are going solo and also to understand what that means for companies that want to work with these individuals.
It will be also a good opportunity to meet again with Stowe and Martin and meet new people.

Adegga new features
I’ve been busy but there’s lots of new stuff at Adegga.
Here’s what’s new:
- A wine blog search engine which covers more than 400 wine blogs.
- New prices and shops. We have a new wine shop search engine that includes more shops, more prices and better interface. Try this example: Wine prices for Barca Velha 1995.
- Top Wines: Top Red Wines, Top White Wines, Top 2005 Wines and many more.
- New Adegga search engine that now allows for searching on wines, producers, wine shops and wine blogs.
Wine Blog Search Engine
We’re now indexing more than 400 wine blogs. It’s now easy to search all these blogs or check what are the latest news.
The AVIN
Together with the wine blog integration we’re finally deploying an interesting way to use our unique code for each wine - the AVIN. This code basically lets us track what is being said about a wine online and at the same time gives wine bloggers more visits and targeted visibility. See for example this wine Cortes de Cima Reserva 2003.
If you’re a wine blogger and want to learn how to get your posts listed please read this.
