Freitag Shop in Zürich
Freitag is one of my favourite brands. I love the concept and the overall experience behind the brand. The Zurich Freitag Shop is a long time favourite. While in Zurich I was finally able to pay a visit.
The shop is an impressive building made of 17 rusted shipping containers and located in an very cool industrial area. Inside the shop you can climb to the top container to do some truckspotting (to choose the tarpaulin for your bag). I’ve made the above video rotating almost 360º around the view of the shop tower.
I’ve also taken a couple of photos from inside the shop. Here’s how it looks from the outside:

Lots of inspiration at LIFT09
I just had a wonderful experience at LIFT in Geneva. There was an refreshingly new audience from many different areas (design, finance, urban planning, business) which alongside the great topics of the talks made up for a very cool event.
This year’s theme was “Where has the future gone?” and some speakers approached the theme from a history point of view while others raised very good questions about the future.
These were some of my favourite presentations:
1. Sarah Marquis and her remarkable experience away from the technological world.
2. Natalie Jeremijenko and her wonderful Environmental Health Clinic.
3. Lee Bryant and his interesting point of view.
4. And of course the father of the Internet Vint Cerf’s end talk about the future of the Internet.
All the conference videos can be watched online (mostly in french).
Tram in Basel
I just spent 24 hours in Basel and 2 days in Zurich. I’ll write a deeper post about Zürich as I think it has some many interesting things to talk about. For now I’ll post a small video of a tram ride in Basel made just before I left the city through the magnificent central station (SBB Basel).
On the video It’s interesting to watch how different the urban landscape is in Basel compared to Lisbon (where I leave). It got me thinking about what kind of changes exist because of cultural differences. Think for example about great number of bicycles parked on the street compared to almost none in Lisbon.
Today and tomorrow I’ll be at LIFT and won’t take the Macbook with me as want to listen, learn and network.
Starting a new (game) business
This is a really interesting presentation full of good tips on starting a new business.
So, what have I learned during the five months Everyplay has been operational? What would I loved to have known before we founded the company? What would be helpful to would-be entrepreneurs? And how much could I cover in 40 minutes?
Here’s the presentation:
The author is Jussi Laakkonen, an entrepreneur from Helsinki, Finland who’s CEO of social gaming startup Everyplay.
shot on red one
While watching the wonderful 3-episode BBC series Wallander I was amazed by the breathtaking footage. I then discovered the series was using the new Red One digital camera.
The Red One is capable of recording at resolutions up to 4096 horizontal by 2304 vertical pixels, directly to flash or hard disk. It features a single Super 35-sized CMOS sensor and a cinematography industry standard PL mount.
What’s the result? Some examples :
And finally a cool unboxing a Red One video. I want one of these!
Next week in Zurich and Geneva
I’ll be heading to Geneva next week to attend LIFT. On the way to Geneva I’ll spend 3 days in Zurich with a stop at Google’s Zurich offices.

LIFT as usual has a very interesting program with a first day dedicated to workshops (which I’ll miss this year). Lots to choose from but these are the ones that caught my attention:
- Get data for your commercial project!
- Internet of Things: next steps and visions of the future
- Coworking Space, Home, Traditional Workspace, … ? Where will you work tomorrow ?
I’ve been to LIFT since it started in 2006 and I’ve only missed last year’s event. It will be interesting to see how it has evolved to one of the most interesting and cosmopolitan conferences in Europe. If you’re reading this and you’re going to Geneva let me know in the comments box!
The Smart Growth Manifesto
Make sure you don’t miss Umair Haque’s article The Smart Growth Manifesto on how the new economy rules are changing forever. Here are what Umair calls the four pillars of smart growth - for economies, communities, and corporations: 1. Outcomes, not income. 2. Connections, not transactions. 3. People, not product. 4. Creativity, not productivity.
A summarizing quote from the article:
The four pillars (1) of smart growth aren’t just design principles for next-generation economies: they’re also design principles for next-generation businesses. Already, tomorrow’s radical innovators don’t accept yesterday’s toxic, tired consensus. Revolutionaries like Apple, Threadless, Etsy, Whole Foods, American Apparel, and Google are already reinventing better ways to grow - from the grass-roots up.
Also don’t miss A User’s Guide to 21st Century Economics.
Quinta da Ria Golf
A visit to the beautiful Quinta da Ria Golf. Thank you Ricardo for the tour.
The Perfect Community
This was a special gift (thank you!). Yesterday I received my numbered edition (#228) of Monocle’s gorgeously beautiful The Perfect Community poster. Monocle’s is my favourite monthly reading and their praise for urban communities living is a great message. You can see more photos on flickr.
