psd2html - you design, they code xhtml

In a consulting project I was doing last month I had the site’s design but had to cut it into xhtml to able to use it. While I was researching for an easier way to do the slicing I found out that there are a couple of companies doing it online at a very competitive price and providing a great set of features:

  • 8 hours to finish
  • $150 (yes, dollars!)
  • Valid XHTML
  • Table-less CSS markup
  • Compatibility with IE, Firefox, Opera and Safari
  • a bunch of other options

My experience
After looking at a couple of available services I decided to give psd2html a try. I filed the online order form where I added 2 different pages (homepage and article page) and selected a couple of different options like Flexible Layout Width and Dynamic Rollovers for the menus. A few minutes later I received an email saying that they were checking the code and then another one with the final time estimate.

Only 14 hours later I got my standard-compliant design. Under-promise and over-deliver is always a winning strategy. I was definitely surprised by how quick and good the service was. Support is also very quick and is done via a ticketing system which is basically a direct communication channel between you and the developer doing your code. I have since used the service again with the same good results.

A commodity = opportunity for companies
While I can imagine various situations where using a service like this would not be suitable, most of the times it is just what a most people are looking for. Quality code done in a short time frame and at a very competitive price is turning xhtml coding into a commodity and reducing the overall price of getting a website launched.

Portuguese services
With so many Portuguese web designers / xhtml coders competing for work how come no one is doing something similar. There are hundreds of companies needing these services (myself included) so it wouldn’t be difficult to come up with clients. Anyone out there?

At my last job, we used to do just that, only in-house, though. I got the psd from the designer and returned the html css js required for the site. Of course we didn’t do it in just a couple of hours, usually took 2 days… that’s the impressive thing about these guys.

By the way, can you point me towards an online example of their end-product? I’m very picky with my markup but sometimes, I’m lazy and need quick solutions. The Transitional DTD wouldn’t cut it, though… They’re pretty smart doing that separation. :)

I have already done this kind of work in the past, but there’s no way I would do it so cheap!

I don’t know how many conversions this guys do a day, but in my perspective $150 does not worth that work.

Also, I don’t believe there are that many Portuguese webdesigners looking for work. I see more companies asking for people with this skills. And I see it everyday in my university employment mailing-list….

My view is that a good/experienced xhtml developer can really save a lot of time, because he won’t need to focus very much on different browsers compatibility, how to achieve certain details, etc..

If you know your way around you can “not write” a lot of code. I think that’s why these type of services are so competitive.

As for Portuguese services, I’m sure you can find a lot (if you haven’t already) of freelancers if you need to. Personally I would get bored if I did only xhtml development, and I also find that doing both xhtml and server side code, also helps understand some problems that might occur and how you should optimize the markup for the developer.

Well, i’ve done this kind of jobe several times. These companyes subcontract people who ask for very little. That’s hou i stardet. I tried to sell some designs in a us forum, then aproached by someone who ordered just design, i made it for 50$, then recently, through a layout i did for openwebdesign i got to make some sites for a uk based company. The design and XHTML, and i can tell you the coding is far mor expensive and tough. If inspired i do a design in about 2 hours, but the coding process is far more hours, about 10 or 15 hours. I charge around 400$, so that 150 is definitelly cheap for the quality they serve.
About this kind of thing in portugal…you have loads of freelancers, but i’m not sure how many % can realy make a clean XHTML css tableless and that validates.
    I try, but it’s hard :)

And the design is the fun part, coding can be hell when standards are concerned.

I recommend DeSlice. I’ve used them on a project or two and have been impressed with the level of clean code.

I just tried PSD2HTML - but it was a huge disappointment. They could not return the design at the promised time. They have promised me a full refund - hopefully I will at least get my money back.

I must update my previous review of PSD2HTML. The management team from PSD2HTML stepped in after I cancelled my order and I had the markup returned on the same business day that I was originally promised. They offered not to charge me for it as well. And I must add that the code looks really clean.

The short story is that I am pleased overall and I will do business with PSD2HTML again.

I’ve used PSD2HTML about 8 times now and they’ve consistently delivered a high quality product. I’ve never had a problem that wasn’t (quickly) resolved with a simple email and turn around times have been fantastic. I haven’t tried any of the other services so I can’t comment on them, but with PSD2HTML’s service I really don’t have a need to.

psd2html.com is a little overpriced. they are currently overloaded so forget about 8 hours delivery…
I use these guys: http://ezmarkup.com - their prices are lower and quality is perfect. Has anyone else used them?
