Why you can’t use PayPal on Amazon.com

I have a few euros on a PayPal account and was planning on buying a few books. But Amazon.com (Earth’s Biggest Bookstore, they say) doesn’t accept them. I though that there should be a good reason for that. And there is.

Apparently, Amazon.com is thinking of developing their own payments service. PayPal, works very well and has millions of users worldwide but it belongs to a long time competitor. According to Amazon.com’s head of operations:

using PayPal itself is not part of Amazon.com’s plans.

From Amazon’s shareholders point of view I can understand that using a competitors system may seem like a very bad idea. But from users (who pay) point of view this has proved to be a very big mistake. Amazon.com auctions are failing and eBay is fostering. Among other reasons there’s is the fact that 74% of eBay auction payments are made using PayPal.

PayPal has helped eBay put Amazon’s auctions in second place. Will it help another big bookstore compete with Amazon.

If I was an online bookstore, this was the time I would be running to PayPal’s website to register myself as a merchant. These are the little competitive advantages that allow smaller businesses to compete and strive.

Yeah, I was pissed when I found out that they don’t accept paypal. I don’t have a credit card, so I have been using checks on amazon, and have spent a few hundred dollars in the past few years at amazon. But now, they are going to be losing business from me, because I can’t keep using checks either.

Is it mot possible for amazon to just settle their differences and use paypal? It would make me buy more stuff from amazon…

(even though amazon is good, it would be better with paypal)

  5. janis on December 3rd, 2006

well there are more problems then only the paypal..

some products like a yelloptop accumulator, they don’t ship it to the Netherlands..
and there are a lot of products they won’t send to europe..

so my point of view is .. don’t have paypal, doesn’t send everything across.. that’s what me piss off!

  6. Dewi Morgan on December 5th, 2006

I get paid in US dollars into paypal.

    I have $400 in Paypal.

I don’t want to keep the dollars as dollars because the dollar is falling like a stone against the pound. So I need to spend or convert to pounds.

I want to buy a $550 item for Christmas from Amazon.com.

I could either pay using Ebay dollars I already have, or pay to convert pounds from my bank to dollars to buy the item, then pay to convert Ebay dollars to pounds in my bank.

    Which is retarded.

The Google checkout doesn’t accept PayPal either. Grr.

You know what I would do if I were a clever person? I’d make me a PayPal-to-Amazon gateway, so people could pay me in PayPal, and I’d buy them their item in Amazon. Charge a small nominal commission… everyone profits.

Paypal is incredibly secure, and very flexible. Amazon.com doesn’t have the best prices (as several price-getting sites have proved to me) in my experiences. I’d just as soon shop at other sites anyways. It was a disappointment, though. If paypal went into some deal with Amazon.com, they could push Ebay instead of hurting themselves like they are right now.

As far as I’m concerned the #1 advantage that Ebay has over Amazon is PAYPAL!

Random guy, please type whole words for everyones sake :(.

I just tried to order a Sony Handycam DVD Camcorder from Amazon, didn’t see a paypal option, i thought it was weird, so i googled, “amazon.com paypal” to see if i could get a direct link to a page on amazon about the paypal issue, and this blog turned up.

After learning amazon doesnt support paypal, they lost my buisness.

But for some reason after reading all the above comments, I dont feel any better about the fact that i cant use paypal on amazon.. Is there a way to easily transfer money from paypal to a debit card?
It seems to me without a damn confirmed bank account, money on your paypal account is stuck till you spend it…

Too bad everyone with a paypal account that would like to purchase from amazon.com can’t fill up this blog with complaints and send to the share holders of amazon. At least it would let them know how customer around the world feel about this issue. Also, the let the share holders know how much business their losing.

It is really worth it ? In the end all businesses form a partnership anyway. Is it loss worth the price of this business ?

It’s the first time I’ve wanted to use paypal and am AMAZED that they are too fucking stupid to accept it.

God save us from companies who want to rule the world.

  16. Michael on May 25th, 2007

Vlaud, in regards to transferring from Paypal to a debit card:

Many debit card issuers don’t advertise this fact, but at least in the United States all debit cards are linked to a bank account, even prepaid cards you buy at a store. If you contact your debit card company and tell them, “I’d like to know how to do direct deposit”, they should give you the routing and account number for doing bank deposits. This information is sufficient for verifying a bank account on Paypal, and then you can deposit directly to your debit card.

Outside the US, I’m not sure if the debit card system is set up the same way, so this may not apply. If anyone needs me to recommend a US debit card issuer that makes direct deposit easy, just email me at misomian@gmail.com.

I’ve used Paypal to make a few purchases before and everything went smoothly.. I did a search for “Mechanismo” this morning because I want to get a copy of that very cool “out of print” book.. There were MANY results that turned up on Amazon.. I thought “well, I have a Paypal account with some leftover funds still in it, I should be able to buy the book right now!”.. That wasn’t the case..

I spent time browsing all the different versions of the book that were available, spent time creating my customer account, got to the billing page, and what did I NOT see? There was no option for Paypal… WTF?? I searched Google for “Amazon and Paypal” and found this blog..

I’d say that this blog has more or less become the official rally point against Amazon’s poor business choice to not use Paypal..

Now I’m off to see if I can find a copy of the book that I can purchase with Paypal… Jeez..

No! It most surely does not! I am just as disappointed about no PayPal for Amazon. However,I’m Having a great time talking in this abnormal voice accent type thing. Moreso, continuing from the passage about Barnes and Noble, I was just a greatly disappointed in having no capabilities of PayPal payment methods. So I wanted tis book, ‘ight? Eh, So I check ou’ this book for Websigh Develomen’ wit Adobby (Adobe) Fyex (Flex) n’ it says to me, it says, “Credit Card Options”. Surey neigh PayPal options. Aye, I agree with you fella’s about this matter and hope Amazon see’s this as though the seven see’s where to be flooding, arr.

People outside the USA read too, probably more.

  30. Seth on August 30th, 2007

Actually, not accepting PayPal doesn’t make anyone “stupid.” It’s a business decision based on reliability.

Let me explain. PayPal has been fraught with two negative issues — fraud being one, and inexplicable account closure being the second.

Some businesses are frightened of accepting PayPal because they don’t want their PayPal account frozen — thus losing all of the money within it — and have no legal recourse to get that money. Read the PayPal TOS. They can lock your account and take your money for no reason whatsoever, and have done it before. Check out http://www.paypalwarning.com/ and http://www.paypalsucks.com/ before calling a company “stupid.” They’re trying to protect their interests.

I run a small online business myself, and the decision to use PayPal or not is a difficult one to make. I use PayPal to purchase things, and haven’t had too many problems yet (although they did mysteriously lose $80 of mine two years ago) … but other people have had major problems.

PayPal is convenient. It is generally reliable for the most people. Amazon chose not to accept it, but they had good reason to make that decision.

  31. Michael on September 13th, 2007

  34. Lasse Rintakumpu on October 4th, 2007

Hmm, the article’s posted two years ago, but since it’s on place one when you Google for “amazon paypal” this seems lika a good place to rant.

Anyway, I have some 150€ left over in PayPal from other purchases. I don’t have any real use for this money (or PayPal), so instead of transfering it into my bank account, I thought to exploit the weak dollar and shorten my Amazon wishlist by some 20 books.

To put it short, I was shocked when at the checkout all Amazon had to offer was credit cards. I have MasterCard, two actually, but don’t want to use them to buy books I really don’t need.

    So, see you later, Amazon.com.

  35. WillF on October 16th, 2007

Just got through setting up a gift card amazon gift certificate for someone — then I found I couldn’t pay with paypal. What a waste of time.

  36. Ian on October 18th, 2007

    I can understand the rants…

But in all my opinion, Amazon provide a good fair service.

It was clever of their competitors to come up with paypal… and I’m sure if Amazon were first ones there then the rants would be on the other side of the court.

Plus business is business, when you reach a certain point you still have to keep finding ways to employ more staff, pay the ones you’ve got, reward people for passion and work ethic with pay rises and offer career advancement…

And with so many friends owning companies, some more successful than others, I can understand why Amazon are saying a stone cold ‘NO’. So I wouldn’t criticise Amazon for not having Paypal.

Just, maybe we should be made aware of it from the outset.

And fingers crossed any systems they bring in will meet the customers needs and keep them going.

  37. Darron on October 25th, 2007

I just went to checkout on Amazon to buy a book for my son for school. They are STILL today not accepting paypal.

Googled for “Amazon Paypal” and found this blog.

Discovered that Barnes and Noble accepts paypal.

So I ordered from Barnes and Noble instead.

Also, I made a mental note that Amazon is less interested in good customer service and more interested in recreating the wheel.

If Amazon would accept Paypal AND at the same time create their own competing payment system, I would shop again at Amazon, and I would consider the merits of their payment system vs. Paypal and might use both or possibly even switch over. (doubtful)

Until then, I’ll shop elsewhere and use my paypal!

  38. Ross on October 27th, 2007

It gets worse, now NBC is selling all their tv shows on Amazon instead of itunes. With Itunes you could use paypal to buy music, tv shows, and music, but with Amazon your back to square one and no paypal. I haven’t actually tried to buy the shows off of Amazon yet because I’m not even sure I can put them on my ipod. Amazon is a great site and I often find exactly what I’m looking for on there, but I know more than once I’ve just went to another site so I could use paypal. About the only use I find for Amazon anymore is to window shop or check reviews for various products that I end up buying off another site. It’s not that I don’t have a credit card, it’s more that if I can I would rather just use my checking account and not have to sign up for a half dozen different payment services to shop around the internet. Paypal is virtually accepted everywhere and not every other service is like that. Paypal might not be what’s in Amazon’s plan, but it’s not in my plan to have accounts all over when I can get the same goods for the same price or less at a different site that does accept paypal.

  40. vector on November 22nd, 2007

I just selected a stack of needed books from Amazon, expecting to use my credit card. That didn’t work real well either because Amazon didn’t ask me for it. Instead, AZ used an old card it had on file somewhere. I couldn’t find where to edit it to substitute a current card, so I called AZ’s help noumber. Twice. Instant answer, but I literally could not understand - at all - the accent by the AZ person. Twice. So I thought of Paypal . . .
And yes - ended up here - at the end of the site. It is too bad. I’ve been a loyal AZ customer for years. But I’m now checking out Barnes & Noble. By the way, I’m primarily a Buyer. I’ve just started selling, but I don’t thiink I would ever consider selling in a system without Paypal. I could never keep track of the transactions long enough to see them to conclusion. And the margin of error without Paypal would be huge.

  41. bodemrys on November 22nd, 2007

Another disgruntaled customer here who googled amazon paypal and found this blog.

Looks like the £300 I wanted to spend is going to ebay rather thgan Amazon.

  42. loathe_creditcards_uk on November 30th, 2007

This is a very good discussion and what I would like to say is that I use PayPal for other things other than eBay and I think it should become a universal debit card which everyone company or organise should use. A fantastic alternative to a credit card which I dislike and I have know wish to own a credit card because I like to operate on a have funds to pay now rather than pay later and run up a debt. It does seem that rather than embracing PayPal Amazon are shrinking their own business clout which is a shame.

  43. Artemis3 on December 5th, 2007

I also don’t live in USA, and have a credit card, but amazon keeps complaining that something is wrong with it. Funny thing is, one of the items was forwarded to another merchant (TigerDirect) and they had no problem with the very same credit card data Amazon forwarded to them and shipped the product without complains.

I happen to have a verified Paypal account, maybe i will try that virtual credit card thing…

  44. Esther on December 8th, 2007

I spent over an hour Christmas shopping on Amazon thinking I was going to be able to use the money in my PayPal account for my kid’s presents! At the end I found I was unable to (disappointed) and guess what? When I found out I couldn’t use paypal, I did a google search and found this blog. I’m not alone! I naturally went to ebay and now am watching items that actually may be less expensive to get (even with shipping) than on Amazon. Amazon is losing some of my business because of it, but I have the money in Paypal and want to use it for Christmas shopping. What else can I do? It’s their lost.

  45. CC on December 12th, 2007

Wanted to spend my paypal money on Amazon… they don’t take it… I’m not going to use credit when I have cash in paypal, I’ll just go to another seller. I think Amazon should figure out a way to use paypal as a customer service necessity. I am not liking them for the fact that they are inconveniencing me… what’ up with that?

  46. Tom Steele on January 13th, 2008

Well, I’m up the same creek as all of you. I have a few $ in paypal and was going to buy some goodies and couldn’t pay via paypal at Amazon.

For me, the $ in paypal is “burning a hole in my pocket” money. It is not in my regular budget and the items I plan to purchase with that money are “fun stuff,” not necessary goods.

So when I go to check out and find I can’t use my paypal, I’m not just going to switch over to a credit card for something I don’t really need anyway and was just buying with mad money.

Seems strange that amazon would throw away money because they don’t want to use paypal because ebay uses it.

  50. MikLav on February 8th, 2008

Although it is understandable business decision, it annoys me as the customer. Checking the sites I can confirm that yes, Barnes & Noble (http://www.barnesandnoble.com) do accept PayPal and they do ship internationally - but their price doesn’t seem to be as attractive as Amazon’s partners; and default international shipment is very expensive - but it goes down if you order above $25.

Well, amazon not accepting PayPal is annoying inconvenience for me but it isn’t really critical, because I can transfer funds from PayPal to my bank account - thus if it is significantly cheaper with Amazon (yet to verify) I might stay with them…

  52. Stunned by what people on March 19th, 2008

You people are morons. You act like PayPal = coins of gold. How anybody can be SHOCKED that an online retailer doesn’t accept PayPal is absurd.

Amazon has been doing big business longer than PayPal and doesnt’ need them. Additionally, it’s crazy to use PayPal as your only way of purchasing online. Get a real credit card for goodness sake. What on earth makes so many people here think that Amazon WOULD accept PayPal?

What are you going to do when you lose access to all your PayPal funds because somebody figured out your password and got access to your account? What are you going to do when PayPal simply decides to freeze your account? What can you do? Nothing, because PayPal is NOT a bank. You don’t have diddly squat for protection if something happens to your money that’s in PayPal’s possession

PayPal is not a bank and doesn’t protect you, the end user, like a bank does. I can’t imagine why anybody would actually CHOOSE to utilize PayPal in such a manner unless they can’t get a real bank account or a real credit card.

And the person who posted that they couldn’t believe that Google Checkout didn’t accept PayPal either???? Seriously, what are you smoking? Are you also suprised that the local BP station won’t take your Exxon credit card?

  53. Angus Fraser on April 27th, 2008

No need for that rant Stunned. Paypal is very convienient as an escrow service which is why it’s so popular. Being so popular, people are naturally annoyed at the disruption of their plans when they find there’s a major hold out, for what is ultimately self defeating reasons. In my view.

  54. KJ on June 11th, 2008

I’ve researched about which is a better online shop, eBay VS amazon, and it seems that Amazon has edge - i would say “Almost..”. Why almost? Almost because we have decided to make the purchase from Amazon but Amazon turned us down :( - we’ll just settle it up with eBay then.

Not having pay pal is a huge disadvantage in buying from Amazon. They really really need to change their checkout side of the website.

…I’ve noticed many sellers that list their books on amazon are also listing them on half.com. It isn’t as easy to use as amazon, but allows paypal.

Just came here from google when searching for Amazon + PayPal. I’ve never actually purchased anything from Amazon.

To my dismay, when trying to buy a new book (”The Art of War”, ironically enough) I found that PayPal wasn’t accepted.

While I can understand Amazons reluctance to accept a payment type from a competitor, the reality is that they are probably missing a very large portion of sales because of it.

If they are building a new payment system to compete with the ‘online bank’ giant, PayPal - They best find a way to snuggle up their integration into PayPal. Since it is the industry leader of transferring funds online, and has proven its security over and over again through out the years, Amazon will have a tough time building that reputation outside of current Amazon users.

I don’t see a problem with Amazon trying to compete in that space, but they need to ride the back of PayPal before jumping in front and shutting out PayPal as an option.

How frustrating! I just finished shopping at Amazon.SNOB lol, and thought I was going crazy because I couldn’t find the paypal payment option…but no it turns out I’m not crazy, it’s amazon.com that’s crazy. Why the beef with paypal? They want to create a similar payment system? Fine then do it, there’s nothing wrong with competition but why not use paypal also and then launch the amazon.com version in addition to it and offer some kind of incentive or benefit for using the amazon system over paypal to draw people in and if the product is good the customers will come. Now that would be real competition. For now it just seems like un-amazon(get it, unamazing…lol I’m a comedian) is too affraid to get in the ring with Paypal. Ok I feel better now, off to ebay I go!

Hi all. There is a small but useful (and working) trick. Go to Ebay. Search for “Amazon Gift”. There a lot. Normally they sell for the real price, i mean, a 10$ gift should cost 10$, not more. Pay with Paypal. You receive the gift (a code) by email. Go to Amazon, put that gift into your account and that’s it. You are buying in Amazon with Paypal money.

    Hope this helps.

.. just another paypal user who got to the payment option page on Amazon and couldn’t quite believe there was no paypal option. Left the site without buying and found this thread - thanks to Jesus I might just go back and buy that boxset using the Amazon gift. Thanks for the idea! ( though I’m not sure I can be bothered - Amazon will obviously never get me in on an impulse buy , it’s too many hoops to jump through).

I just loaded up my Amazon cart with about $200 worth of books, because my PayPal account has some extra in it. I got to checkout and found I can’t do it.

I’m now off to eBay and B&N to buy what I would have from Amazon. Their loss!

This, combined with customer service at Amazon that doesn’t speak English and constantly and ridiculously screws up orders, has caused me to shift my shopping (and my affiliate accounts) to other merchants.

If Amazon accept Paypal, they would be a much bigger online shop/store.
At my point, I think Ebay is much better, cuz they accept Paypal.

Get a paypal debit/master card. It’s free and you can use it on AMAZON and at any store online or offline where mastercard is accepted. The only fees are for atm withdrawls.

The paypal debit/master card works on Amazon, I can confirm this to be true. Good luck. I even accept it for my wireless ip cameras I sell on my website. Amazing, Iphone view. Lol

i lost my paypal debit card and just now discovered that i cannot buy anything using regular paypal. this is the tail wagging the dog and NOT good for amazon shareholders or customers.

i spend an embarrassing amount of money on amazon (threw away my tv and buy a ton of vod from them books, electonics, etc.

the money i wanted to spend today is in my paypal for this purpose and while i COULD decide to use a different care, i choose not to support such disregard for customer convience on the hope that their own proprietary money system will work.

im voting with my wallet and buying this season of bones on itunes tonight instead. will i be back? maybe when i get my debit card back from paypal, but then again maybe i wont.

Years ago, Amazon used to accept PayPal. I have bought many items from there using PayPal. Now, I don’t use Amazon since I don’t want to use credit card or anything other than PayPal.
