I have a few euros on a PayPal account and was planning on buying a few books. But Amazon.com (Earth’s Biggest Bookstore, they say) doesn’t accept them. I though that there should be a good reason for that. And there is.
Apparently, Amazon.com is thinking of developing their own payments service. PayPal, works very well and has millions of users worldwide but it belongs to a long time competitor. According to Amazon.com’s head of operations:
using PayPal itself is not part of Amazon.com’s plans.
From Amazon’s shareholders point of view I can understand that using a competitors system may seem like a very bad idea. But from users (who pay) point of view this has proved to be a very big mistake. Amazon.com auctions are failing and eBay is fostering. Among other reasons there’s is the fact that 74% of eBay auction payments are made using PayPal.
PayPal has helped eBay put Amazon’s auctions in second place. Will it help another big bookstore compete with Amazon.
If I was an online bookstore, this was the time I would be running to PayPal’s website to register myself as a merchant. These are the little competitive advantages that allow smaller businesses to compete and strive.

I just realised they dont do paypal also so searched: “amazon paypal” and arrived here
I want to add that amazon.com also just lost me as a customer.
I’m buying the book from Barnes & Noble at a higher price,
and paying via PayPal
You people are morons. You act like PayPal = coins of gold. How anybody can be SHOCKED that an online retailer doesn’t accept PayPal is absurd.
Amazon has been doing big business longer than PayPal and doesnt’ need them. Additionally, it’s crazy to use PayPal as your only way of purchasing online. Get a real credit card for goodness sake. What on earth makes so many people here think that Amazon WOULD accept PayPal?
What are you going to do when you lose access to all your PayPal funds because somebody figured out your password and got access to your account? What are you going to do when PayPal simply decides to freeze your account? What can you do? Nothing, because PayPal is NOT a bank. You don’t have diddly squat for protection if something happens to your money that’s in PayPal’s possession
PayPal is not a bank and doesn’t protect you, the end user, like a bank does. I can’t imagine why anybody would actually CHOOSE to utilize PayPal in such a manner unless they can’t get a real bank account or a real credit card.
And the person who posted that they couldn’t believe that Google Checkout didn’t accept PayPal either???? Seriously, what are you smoking? Are you also suprised that the local BP station won’t take your Exxon credit card?
No need for that rant Stunned. Paypal is very convienient as an escrow service which is why it’s so popular. Being so popular, people are naturally annoyed at the disruption of their plans when they find there’s a major hold out, for what is ultimately self defeating reasons. In my view.
Great job, Amazon. You’ve lost another customer over your ego — okay, well not really, but as a large company you should give your customer CHOICES. I _was_ going to buy some memory sticks from you guys but you didn’t accept PayPal. Bummer.
Amazon, please please please accept PayPal. Give paying customers like me more choices!!!
I was just checking and noticed that Powell’s accepts PayPal…a good place to spend my PayPal earnings rather than Amazon….silly Amazon.
I have the same story to tell like many others before me.
S, in nutshell, my first visit to Amazon.com was my last visit.
I’ve got US$200 in my Amazon shopping cart and am now at the checkout screen… but with no PayPal, not interested.
I have seen good stuff in amazon, but since they don’t accept paypal I don’t even bother anymore. Stick up with EBAY
Amazon sucks w/o PayPal. NEVER shopping there again.
That is why there is BuyText Mobile Payments which launches early next year. Cell phone payments across the board via mobile.
Hey, I’m another amazon customer that was shocked when I realized that they didn’t accept paypal.
And I googled ‘amazon paypal’ and found this place…
But, they didn’t lose me as a customer… yet.
If they don’t use paypal I’ll use my credit card, simple as that.
‘Cause Amazon is that reliable.
very2 bad news for amazon its suck for paypal user
yet, you can now use Paypal credit card on Amazon.

Hello everybody.
I heard amazon doesn’t accept paypol, and I am not happy with that. What means that? For every new online shop I have to create a new payment account? Isn’t it easier to use one unique and universal account for everything (ebay, amazon, etc…) such as paypol?
I would LOVE it if Amazon accepted paypal… it would make life so much easier! as it is, I have a hodge podge of accounts for online business, instead of streamlined into one, paypal.
I just wanted some treats for my dog. No paypal no me.
Me and my friends planned to get a new laptop for each of us but not sure what could be the best choice to where will we do the purchase. Then we come up to choose between eBay and Amazon.
I’ve researched about which is a better online shop, eBay VS amazon, and it seems that Amazon has edge – i would say “Almost..”. Why almost? Almost because we have decided to make the purchase from Amazon but Amazon turned us down
– we’ll just settle it up with eBay then.
I think if Amazon could only accept PayPal, they wont loose a single client.
I went to the checkout spot with a cart full of stuff and found out that Amazon did not accept paypal. What really pissed me off was why they made me fill out my address and all that. A waste of time. Well, Ebay is where it is.
Yeah this really sucks amazon.com was about to get $78 from me but due to this they are losing business because I wont be back.
I only trust a few sites with my credit card and I don’t do enough online buying to make Amazon trust worthy to me.
So enjoy losing my business “watches stock drop a half point”
I can understand why Amazon doesn’t want to deal with their competitor. I just hope PayPal creates a virtual credit card that works in Canada to increase my buying options without me having to actually go in to debt to buy books.
In the meantime, which other bookstores do you know of that accept PayPal?
Last week was my first time to buy on Amazon and I just could not beleive the difficuilty in making my purchase. It was unreal and that I really needed the product I would have left it. Not having pay pal is a huge disadvantage in buying from Amazon. They really really need to change their checkout side of the website.
…I’ve noticed many sellers that list their books on amazon are also listing them on half.com. It isn’t as easy to use as amazon, but allows paypal.
Just came here from google when searching for Amazon + PayPal. I’ve never actually purchased anything from Amazon.
To my dismay, when trying to buy a new book (“The Art of War”, ironically enough) I found that PayPal wasn’t accepted.
While I can understand Amazons reluctance to accept a payment type from a competitor, the reality is that they are probably missing a very large portion of sales because of it.
If they are building a new payment system to compete with the ‘online bank’ giant, PayPal – They best find a way to snuggle up their integration into PayPal. Since it is the industry leader of transferring funds online, and has proven its security over and over again through out the years, Amazon will have a tough time building that reputation outside of current Amazon users.
I don’t see a problem with Amazon trying to compete in that space, but they need to ride the back of PayPal before jumping in front and shutting out PayPal as an option.
anyone know if there is a decent big online bookstore in uk that accepts paypal. first one i thought of was waterstones but they dont accept pp either, unbelievably !
to amazon uk. me no credit card. you no paypal = you no customer
oh, and thanks for providing the info for buying on ebay uk
hm… rather difficult i thought for accept this reality, paypal and ebay become a giant enemy for amazon
How frustrating! I just finished shopping at Amazon.SNOB lol, and thought I was going crazy because I couldn’t find the paypal payment option…but no it turns out I’m not crazy, it’s amazon.com that’s crazy. Why the beef with paypal? They want to create a similar payment system? Fine then do it, there’s nothing wrong with competition but why not use paypal also and then launch the amazon.com version in addition to it and offer some kind of incentive or benefit for using the amazon system over paypal to draw people in and if the product is good the customers will come. Now that would be real competition. For now it just seems like un-amazon(get it, unamazing…lol I’m a comedian) is too affraid to get in the ring with Paypal. Ok I feel better now, off to ebay I go!
Hi all. There is a small but useful (and working) trick. Go to Ebay. Search for “Amazon Gift”. There a lot. Normally they sell for the real price, i mean, a 10$ gift should cost 10$, not more. Pay with Paypal. You receive the gift (a code) by email. Go to Amazon, put that gift into your account and that’s it. You are buying in Amazon with Paypal money.
Hope this helps.
.. just another paypal user who got to the payment option page on Amazon and couldn’t quite believe there was no paypal option. Left the site without buying and found this thread – thanks to Jesus I might just go back and buy that boxset using the Amazon gift. Thanks for the idea! ( though I’m not sure I can be bothered – Amazon will obviously never get me in on an impulse buy , it’s too many hoops to jump through).
I just loaded up my Amazon cart with about $200 worth of books, because my PayPal account has some extra in it. I got to checkout and found I can’t do it.
I’m now off to eBay and B&N to buy what I would have from Amazon. Their loss!
This, combined with customer service at Amazon that doesn’t speak English and constantly and ridiculously screws up orders, has caused me to shift my shopping (and my affiliate accounts) to other merchants.
If Amazon accept Paypal, they would be a much bigger online shop/store.
At my point, I think Ebay is much better, cuz they accept Paypal.
I started an amazon account. But now that Ive figured out they dont use Paypal, I say bye bye amazon and hello ebay. What a suckage
Get a paypal debit/master card. It’s free and you can use it on AMAZON and at any store online or offline where mastercard is accepted. The only fees are for atm withdrawls.
The paypal debit/master card works on Amazon, I can confirm this to be true. Good luck. I even accept it for my wireless ip cameras I sell on my website. Amazing, Iphone view. Lol
i lost my paypal debit card and just now discovered that i cannot buy anything using regular paypal. this is the tail wagging the dog and NOT good for amazon shareholders or customers.
i spend an embarrassing amount of money on amazon (threw away my tv and buy a ton of vod from them books, electonics, etc.
the money i wanted to spend today is in my paypal for this purpose and while i COULD decide to use a different care, i choose not to support such disregard for customer convience on the hope that their own proprietary money system will work.
im voting with my wallet and buying this season of bones on itunes tonight instead. will i be back? maybe when i get my debit card back from paypal, but then again maybe i wont.
Years ago, Amazon used to accept PayPal. I have bought many items from there using PayPal. Now, I don’t use Amazon since I don’t want to use credit card or anything other than PayPal.
I wanted to buy a pare of shoes on amazon.com but there alsot sold out i have created a an paypal account now but im affraid its gonna take to long to get the money on my paypal account and than apply for a paypal debit card does anyone know an alternative site were i can buy these shoes http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0039IS9YY/ref=ord_cart_shr?ie=UTF8&m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE , and as swel as al of you i think its just very stupid of amazon that they only accept credit and ebit cards they are missing a lot of costumers there by, and its just very anoying either and if you are working on an own paymant mehtod than get rid of paypal when you have launched it or you will launch it very soon, dont get rif of paypal an than wait months with launching that method, just so damn anoying you can do so little about it, makes me so angry.
does anyone know another solution beside the paypal debit card, i live in the netheralnds, europe and you can only aply for a paypal debit card in the usa its so frustrating… so if anyone can help me
Well well, Amazon just lost another customer. I FINALLY got my parents to use paypal, after years of persuading. How am I suppose to get them to accept using credit cards online? No way in hell will they agree. Too bad, I like shopping on amazon too
. They have a large selection of items, and discounts.
To be honest, I don’t like using ebay as much. It’s just too messy for me, and hard to find the right items. But now, I suppose I have to.
As for paypal debit card as some suggests, it’s too bad student account isn’t available in Canada. Or at least, I can’t find it.
People I think it’s important to realize that Amazon and Ebay despise each other therefore it is unlikely that Amazon will ever be joining paypal. On the other hand you can just buy a amazon gift card off Ebay with paypal then spend it on amazon items. No biggie. I think Ebay is good for things but their books are overpriced. That’s why I come to Amazon. Besides Amazon should have earned enough trust with everyone for us to feel comfortable linking a credit or debit card to our accounts.
The reason why people prefer paypal is because they do not have a credit card like myself. I only shop online with sites that do not need a verified shipping address, in order to verify it I need to register with my credit which I don’t have one. Therefore It is a convenient way for people with a banking account instead the need of a credit card. And as far as loosing paypal funds you do not use it as your bank account, only add enough money for a certain products which you do need to buy. And plus your funds does not go into your paypal account 5 to 7 business days, just be on the watch when it does goes in then shop instantly down to five dollars just like I did. So how am I gonna loose my money? you tell me. It would be nice if amazon.ca have this feature enable, because I just left them and went elsewhere to buy a ps2 console.
